But they put him to bed anyway, taking a “wait and see” approach and only dialed 911 when they found him unresponsive the following morning, cops say.

Anne Arundel County Police and fire departments responded to the infant’s Maryland, US, home on July 27 at around 9.28am – but after taking him to the hospital he was pronounced dead at 10.19am.

About 18 days after Niyear’s death, a search warrant of the house revealed that every room had empty capsules with trace powdery substances.

Police said: “Upon completion of the search warrant over one hundred gel caps were recovered from the floor, the infant’s diaper bag, and various other areas within the residence.

“Upon conclusion the capsules recovered from the mother’s bedroom tested positive for both Heroin and Fentanyl.”

Further investigations revealed Laurie had driven baby Nuyear and her two daughters to Baltimore City to buy heroin the day before.

Both Alexus and Laurie have been charged with first-degree child abuse resulting in death, second-degree child abuse, manslaughter, and reckless endangerment.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed an autopsy and confirmed: “Fentanyl and Morphine were present in the infant’s blood, liver, and stomach contents.”

According the police department’s Wednesday press release: “The Anne Arundel County Police and State’s Attorney’s Office is aware of the opioid epidemic facing this county and our nation.

“Since April 20, 2017, a new pilot program, “Safe Stations”, was implemented in response to the growing opioid epidemic and the Governor’s declared State of Emergency.”

Despite arrests being made, police are still investigating and urge anyone with information to call the Anne Arundel County Homicide Unit at 410-222-4731.
